How the ZONE AI Digital Thumbs Up Boosts Worksite Safety
Posted on 23/10/2025 ArrayWorking environments have long used a thumbs up hand signal as a method of communicating between ground-workers and machinery operators- but what does it mean?
Put simply, if a worker wants to approach the zone where a machine is operating, they raise their thumb at the operator, and wait for the operator to bring the machine to a stop and return the signal. The concept is straightforward and effective- but it’s not without fault.
That’s where our ZONE AI digital thumbs up comes in. It builds on the traditional thumbs up with a clearly visible digital sign, which signals for both clear approach (green thumbs up) and do not approach (red cross). Thanks to a trigger attached to either handbrake or deadman, this system cannot be activated when the vehicle is in operation, which acts to prevent accidental miscommunication or accidental operation of the machine which could occur when using a traditional hand sign.
Take a look at how the system works below.
How the ZONE AI Digital Thumbs Up Works
If a worker wants to approach a vehicle, they must wait for the green thumbs up to display. The operator signals via a simple in-cab switch, which is integrated with the vehicle’s handbrake or deadman, preventing accidental use. Once activated, the warning alarms will mute, but in-cab displays will remain active, and the worker may safely approach the machine.
The ZONE AI thumbs up offers:
- Simple and clear communication
- Minimal room for human error
- Protection for groundworkers
- An opportunity for site managers to set safety standards
- Integration with wider Human Form Recognition within the ZONE AI system
Integrating the Digital Thumbs Up with ZONE AI HFR
The ZONE AI Digital Thumbs Up can be offered as a standalone solution for addressing operator-worker communication alone, but for site managers looking to really elevate their safety, we recommend integration with a wider AI Human Form Recognition camera system.
The ZONE AI HFR System deploys 1-4 cameras with customisable detection zones alongside audible and visual alerting. This works to ensure operators have the chance to bring a machine to a safe stop if a vulnerable road user or groundworker enters close proximity.
What environments should the Digital Thumbs Up be used in?
The ZONE AI Digital Thumbs Up can be integrated into any workspace where machinery operates, whether it’s a worksite or a warehouse.
Whilst the system was designed based on traditional plant machinery thumbs up communication, many businesses are also choosing to deploy this system on Forklift Trucks. Forklift accidents are a vastly overlooked issue in workplace safety, but many businesses are realising that systems like this can make a huge difference to safety around these machines.
Having a system fitted correctly with reliable equipment is vital to achieve this coverage successfully. Whilst some machines do not require 360° coverage, it is often recommended to fit this, future proofing your set up and providing a more effective aide for the operator.

Is the ZONE AI Digital Thumbs Up right for you?
Protecting your staff should be the priority in any business where plant machinery and workers operate in close proximity. Investing in tools to help reduce high risk interactions is a no-brainer for improving the safety of your worksite. Whilst there’s no one technology to eliminate this issue, the Digital Thumbs Up system is a simple and effective way to reduce it.
If your business involves groundworkers and machines working together, the system is a perfect fit. We recommend integrating it with a wider ZONE AI HFR system for increased protection, accountability and to build data around your worksite.
